Axatana at a glance

Use Axatana when you want stance flexibility and sustained pressure. Its listed damage identity is fast transforming melee; that label describes the practical rhythm, not a fixed damage number that would become stale after balancing changes.

Primary weapons and sidearms solve different problems. A primary weapon carries the normal exchange and helps restore Resolve through successful attacks. A sidearm consumes Resolve for a ranged or specialist action. Compare the opportunity cost before calling one item stronger: a powerful shot is not available when the meter is empty.

How to get Axatana

Destination: a niche in the lower Forgotten Tower. Activate a nearby Beacon, clear enough space to read the final landmark, and confirm that the item name matches before leaving the area.

  1. From Sester's Gate, drop past the Rollerball courtyard and turn left instead of entering the abbey.
  2. Use the jump gate across the ravine, cross the tower with the second gate and press the plate beside the metal door.
  3. Defeat the Dagger Sester and take Axatana from the wall niche.

If a gate or interaction does not respond, review the most recent key item, dungeon completion and traversal ability rather than assuming the route is broken. The current guide gives the shortest verified landmark chain without inventing a universal boss requirement where the consulted sources do not state one.

Moveset and best use

Its fast form supports repeated light hits while the heavier option gives reach when an enemy will not stay close. Treat the transformation as a tactical choice, not decoration.

Test the neutral light string, heavy opener, sprinting attack and post-dodge attack separately. Record which animation gives the fastest recovery and which carries the most stagger risk. The goal is to leave the practice area with one low-risk punish and one high-commitment option—not to memorize every branch before using the weapon in a real route.

Harden can be activated during many committed melee animations, but the correct timing depends on the attack and the enemy's contact point. Begin the swing, Harden before impact, and let the stored animation finish only after the hit has bounced. Sidearms instead need a safe aiming or lock-on window; create that window first.

Upgrade and infusion priorities

Blood, poison or any on-hit effect benefits from the fast sequence; switch to heavier attacks when you need stagger instead of status buildup.

Before spending a rare material, compare the in-game tooltip against the current game version. Patch adjustments can change scaling, status buildup or compatibility. Upgrade the weapon because it supports a repeated combat decision, not because an older tier list gives it a letter grade. A reliable +8 tool you understand may outperform a newly acquired specialist at the same point in the campaign.

Use a controlled test: attack the same enemy from a rested Beacon, note the number of clean contacts and the stagger point, apply one change, then repeat. Status effects need their own test because buildup, resistance and duration are not the same as direct hit damage.

Recommended Shell pairings

These pairings are practical starting points. They connect the weapon's animation rhythm to a Shell's defensive and resource loop. They are not proof that other Shells cannot use the item, and they do not replace testing with your current bond upgrades.

Combat plan and mistakes to avoid

Approach with the shortest reliable attack, watch the enemy's recovery, and commit to the longer option only after the pattern is confirmed. Keep enough stamina or space to exit. When using a sidearm, decide whether the shot is an interrupt, a finisher or a status setup before spending Resolve.

  • Do not upgrade immediately after pickup; use the full basic moveset on ordinary enemies first.
  • Do not combine an unfamiliar Shell, infusion and weapon in the same boss attempt.
  • Do not judge a heavy weapon from one missed swing; learn the Harden timing inside its commitment.
  • Do not fire a sidearm into an enemy that is already leaving the line of sight.

Axatana is successful when it makes the next safe decision obvious. If you spend more attention fighting the weapon's recovery than reading the enemy, switch to a simpler moveset and return later.
