Boss order and locations

Mortal Shell II lets exploration branches overlap, so the list is a practical difficulty curve rather than a claim that every encounter is hard-locked to one order. Tar Golem is a one-time tutorial fight; Magdalena through Sir Isaac form the main regional gates; four Unfound Path bosses close the route.

Suggested Shells match a useful defensive or control tool to the encounter. They are recommendations, not gates. A fully bonded Shell you understand is usually safer than changing bodies immediately before an unfamiliar boss.

Every boss: patterns and counters

Encounter 01 · Prologue

Tar Golem

★★☆☆☆

Reward note: No, You Still Can't Win achievement if reduced to minimum health. Suggested Shell: Harros.

Watch for

  • Slow normal swings that can be guarded or parried
  • A high leap into an unblockable ground smash
  • Fire-heavy damage that punishes a direct hit

Practical plan

  1. Equip the Burnt Effigy if you defeated the nearby Tainted Vestige.
  2. Parry the readable normal swings, riposte, then back away.
  3. When the Golem leaps, dodge clear of the landing point instead of trying to Harden the unblockable smash.
Encounter 02 · Glutted Mire

Magdalena, the Lady of the Woods

★★☆☆☆

Reward note: 26 Ova and story progression. Suggested Shell: Tiel.

Watch for

  • Forward wheelchair charges with a spiked roller
  • Fire spray that leaves burning ground
  • A one-time wave of small adds around half health
  • Wasp aura and a tracking arm-cannon shot in phase two

Practical plan

  1. Attack the back of the chair; repeated rear hits can cause a separate stagger.
  2. Clear the summoned babies before resuming boss damage.
  3. Leave the wasp radius immediately and dodge the tracking projectile only after it is fired.
Encounter 03 · Sanguine Caverns

The Lost Child

★★★☆☆

Reward note: Ova and Lost Clotstone. Suggested Shell: Proxima.

Watch for

  • Long-windup arm swipes
  • Three rapid bites when the bite is blockable
  • Unblockable leap and body slam
  • Rear goop stream after jumping away

Practical plan

  1. Use Harden against the slow arm sweep or dodge through its outside edge.
  2. Do not counter after the first quick bite; wait for the three-bite string to finish.
  3. When it jumps away, keep moving sideways until the goop stream ends.
Encounter 04 · Prisoner's Domain

The Nameless Captive

★★★★

Reward note: Ova and the Peter's Perfect Parry challenge. Suggested Shell: Eredrim.

Watch for

  • Four alternating swings with slower third and fourth hits
  • One or three head slams
  • A fast seven-hit spin at the phase change
  • A second seven-hit headspin: two slow, four fast, one slow

Practical plan

  1. Use the first phase to learn the delayed third and fourth parry timings.
  2. For the achievement, keep the stagger meter empty and perfectly guard all seven phase-two headspin hits.
  3. If you are not attempting the achievement, run out of the spin rather than gambling the entire attempt.
Encounter 05 · Conquered Temple

Droeg, the Conqueror

★★★☆☆

Reward note: Ova and story progression. Suggested Shell: Eredrim.

Watch for

  • Slow frost club sweeps
  • Three overhead club strikes
  • Stomps at close range
  • Tracking frost projectiles after holding its head

Practical plan

  1. Dodge behind during the three overhead strikes; Droeg turns slowly once the string begins.
  2. Use Martyr's Ash or Eredrim's frost resistance for a larger error margin.
  3. Hide behind the left stone slab or right tree when the projectile cloud appears.
Encounter 06 · Withered Shoals

Hexapod

★★★★

Reward note: Ova and story progression. Suggested Shell: Proxima.

Watch for

  • Forward appendage strikes with short tells
  • Large lateral swipes
  • Quick unblockable attacks
  • Homing shots during phase two

Practical plan

  1. Hold Harden until an appendage actually connects; visual tells are less reliable here.
  2. Use the Triarch Repeater when the face is exposed, then relocate.
  3. Move behind the large skeletons or keep dodging sideways through the phase-two shots.
Encounter 07 · Fated Citadel

Sir Isaac, the Scholar-Prince

★★★★

Reward note: Ova and story progression. Suggested Shell: Genessa.

Watch for

  • Shield-and-sword strings in phase one
  • A very fast shield bash at point-blank range
  • Twin-sword multi-hit strings in phase two
  • Attacks that can register two closely spaced hits

Practical plan

  1. Parry the first phase at measured range instead of attacking into the shield.
  2. Use Harden in phase two when double-hit timing makes a normal parry unreliable.
  3. Genessa's Faithful Doubles or Tiel's Shadow clones can hold Isaac's attention during a long combo.
Encounter 08 · The Unfound Path

Malborn Offspring

★★★★★

Reward note: Endgame progression. Suggested Shell: Genessa.

Watch for

  • Fast multi-hit sword combinations
  • Grabs that can kill lightly armored Shells
  • Two complete health bars
  • A damaging lightning revival between phases

Practical plan

  1. Enter phase two with full Resolve and move away from the revival lightning.
  2. Send Faithful Doubles first, then run in for a short Resolve-building punish.
  3. Never stand in front after the doubles vanish; reset the summon cycle before the grab starts.
Encounter 09 · The Unfound Path

The Monolith

★★★★★

Reward note: Endgame progression. Suggested Shell: Tiel.

Watch for

  • Central ball slams that pull the wall forward
  • Two- or three-part full-body ground slams
  • Single tracking and sweeping fan lasers
  • Final-phase spinning body and four rotating arena lasers

Practical plan

  1. Damage the hanging center and retreat when repeated ball slams begin.
  2. Dodge through the fan laser to reach the back, where a short punish is safe.
  3. For the four rotating lasers, move with their rotation and dodge through each beam from long range.
Encounter 10 · The Unfound Path

Orrem, the Reclaimed

★★★★

Reward note: Endgame progression. Suggested Shell: Lazlo.

Watch for

  • Tar-Golem-style Bloodcurse attacks in phase one
  • Alternating arm slams while moving on all fours
  • A sudden forward lunge at range
  • Centipede projectiles from the back

Practical plan

  1. Equip Bloodseed for Bloodcurse resistance.
  2. Stay near a front leg, dodge under each arm slam and swap sides as Orrem turns.
  3. If distance opens, move laterally for the projectile stream and be ready for the fast lunge.
Encounter 11 · The Unfound Path

Zmey, the Unbidden

★★★★★

Reward note: Final story completion. Suggested Shell: Tiel.

Watch for

  • Two downward sword waves
  • Cosmic breath that coats the ground
  • Three stomps and a four-swing retreat
  • A lethal tail grab and four Cosmic waves in phase two

Practical plan

  1. Equip Seedbearer's Scripture for its passive Cosmic Disease resistance.
  2. Fight between the legs, but dodge backward when the unblockable ground slam or three-stomp field begins.
  3. At phase two, run away from the first four waves; later waves must be dodged through one at a time.

Preparation that actually helps

Enter with one known primary weapon and enough healing to survive a learning attempt. Do not spend every rare resource because a guide recommends a different element. First confirm the cause of death: mistimed defense, status buildup, camera position, greed after a punish, or missing damage. Then change the smallest thing that answers it.

Resolve should have a job before the fog wall. Decide whether the sidearm will interrupt an add, punish a ranged phase, build status or finish the final segment. If you spend it on the first safe opening, it may be absent when the mechanic it was chosen for appears.

Use the first attempt to map only the opener and one transition. Boss names and move descriptions can make a fight sound deterministic, but positioning changes which branch appears. Watch shoulders, weapon arcs, arena effects and the enemy's recovery—not a memorized stopwatch.

Special achievement challenges

No, You Still Can't Win belongs to the one-time Tar Golem prologue encounter. Reduce the boss to minimum health before leaving that sequence. Peter's Perfect Parry asks for perfect guards across the Nameless Captive's seven-hit phase-two headspin; keep the stagger meter empty so the full string can play.

These objectives conflict with the safest normal strategy. On a completion run, record the condition before entering and build the attempt around it. During an ordinary clear, running away from the Captive's spin and avoiding unnecessary Tar Golem risk are sensible choices.
